There are three basic types of cnc machining centers for the wood working industries.
The first is the pod and rail style machine, which is also referred to as a point to point cnc router. This machine is based on parts having been already cut and square by another machine such as a beam saw. The parts are then transferred to the point to point, and the machine continues to either shape them into something other than a square, drill them, and/or even saw them. Some of these machine can also apply edgebanding.

Pod and Rail CNC

The second is the flat table style machine. This machine allows you to place a full sheet of material on the machine, and it will cut out pattern , complex shaped, or square parts, as well as machine them like the point to point machine.
The third, is a combination machine that functions as a pod and rail machine, as well as a flat table machine. This style machine gives you the benefit of both machines, and also takes up less floor space than the two separate machines would.
